🍒 Redcurrants are small, vibrant red berries that grow in clusters on deciduous shrubs, scientifically known as Ribes rubrum. Native to western Europe, they’re part of the gooseberry family and have been cultivated since the 17th century.

🌿 Physical Characteristics

  • Grow on shrubs about 1–1.5 meters tall
  • Leaves are five-lobed and arranged spirally
  • Flowers are yellow-green, forming drooping racemes
  • Berries are translucent red, about 8–12 mm in diameter
  • Each raceme holds 3–10 berries

  • Known for their tart flavor, which intensifies as they ripen
  • Used in jams, jellies, sauces, and desserts
  • Popular in redcurrant jelly, especially in the UK with lamb or game
